Why I Got Into Crypto

Like many crypto-lifers, I got into crypto through the promise of something different.

What brought you to crypto?

Was it the simple promise of a way out? Was it something else entirely?

I’ve thought about this question for the past four years and what I’ve come up with is that I’ve always been running against the grain. Throughout high school, I never really fit in, except with the kids who didn’t conform, i.e., those who both played Dungeons and Dragons (before it was mainstream) and held massive jam sessions, while playing so much Call of Duty that they basically became semi-pros. On top of this, I constantly read.

It didn’t matter what the topic was.

I spent more time reading in the library than doing homework. In doing so, found myself combing through everything from ancient philosophy to classic literature to mystery novels and beyond.

Throughout the time, any moment that I found myself thinking about my future, I never put it in the context of the USA. I always thought about living abroad and experiencing other cultures and took that interest to college, where I began to study French as well as get involved with the international community there.

By the time I graduated, I found myself moving to China to teach English and while that particular opportunity ultimately didn’t work out, something a whole lot more important did. I met my partner, with whom I ended up moving to the Czech Republic, which is her home country. From there, I threw myself headlong into teaching once again and reading anything I could get my hands on(the latter of which I’d never really stopped doing).

It was that second hobby that drew me to Bitcoin.

One day my partner and I went to the local library in her hometown and I stumbled upon Digital Gold, by Nathaniel Popper. I remember, looking upon that book’s title and thinking “reinvent money?” How is that possible?

From there, I read the entire book in one day and never looked back. Though I admittedly took about a year to let the ideas percolate in my mind, by late 2017, I found myself in the thick of the ICO boom as an eager student of the space.

During that turbulent time, my experience in business school only increased my interest in crypto. I remember thinking that as I got closer to attaining my degree that I didn’t see any other path for my career that was more logical.

All in all, that’s where I ended up.

Through riding the crypto wave to its crest, and then through its trough in 2018, back to a higher point in 2019, I believe I’ve learned more about one space than I’ve ever learned about anything else. Still, since I go by the mantra that we’re always students, I’m always trying to take in more.

Through all of my content, I aim to share my continuous journey with anyone and everyone who’s interested. If that’s you, then I appreciate you and value your thoughts! In my next post, I’ll dig back into my thoughts on the market but for now, keep in mind that I’m an open book and if you’re interested in reaching out, you can always do so here or on Twitter.

What about you?
